The 30 x 30 Montreal marine protection and restoration targets are requiring a number of countries to define additional protected marine areas in or order to meet the 2030 target. These areas then need protecting to maintain and increase their biodiversity. Identifying the areas is the easy part, but how do you fund these new areas. Quantifying the biodiversity gain which can then be monetized by issuance of credits is one income stream that can be used. rePLANET are currently investigating funding options for marine reserves in Costa Rica, Anguilla and the UK.
