Many ecosystems simply don’t offer the carbon benefits needed to make their restoration viable through the carbon markets alone, and yet their biodiversity is under severe threat and of major conservation importance. In these instances, rePLANET designs projects to be funded through innovative biodiversity credits, either in isolation or stacked with carbon credits where appropriate.
All of the rePLANET projects in this category will generate biodiversity credits using the Wallacea Trust Methodology, which pioneered the now well established “basket of metrics” approach to the measurement of biodiversity gains. Independent verification of the biodiversity claims will then be delivered via academic peer-review by the Biodiversity Futures Initiative.
