rePLANET seeks to drive large scale ecological restoration and protection through private sector funding. This work is funded through the sale of carbon and biodiversity credits on the voluntary markets, and rePLANET are concerned that the main beneficiary of the income raised should be the local stakeholders (owners, users or managers of the areas being restored or protected) instead of brokers and others based outside the countries of the ecosystems being restored or protected.
This has the advantage that those buying the carbon and biodiversity credits can be confident that a guaranteed percentage is supporting local communities and they can’t be exposed in the media as a corporate that is exploiting impoverished local communities in order to achieve their climate or biodiversity targets. This level of funding can be life-changing for the impoverished communities benefiting, allowing them to develop small businesses or improve health, education or housing.
Whilst the projects supported by both companies produce premium quality carbon and biodiversity credits with substantial benefits to local communities, the costs of these credits are deliberately kept competitive so that they attract large scale-funding to restore or protect substantial areas.
